Silver Strikers Football Club has defeated Be Forward Wanderers Football Club 1-0 to go through to the semi finals of the 2019 Airtel top 8 cup in a match played on Tuesday afternoon at the Silver Stadium.
With Wanderers going into the game trailing 1-0 having lost the fist leg of the quarter finals at the Kazumu Stadium a few weeks ago, they started the game on a high note in search of an early goal but lucky was not on their side as in the early minutes of the first half, striker Babatunde Adepoju failed to score from a clear chance.
The visitors were a better side for the first 20 minutes until the home side settled down and started to pressurise Wanderers that in the 26th minute Duncan Nyoni saw his header hitting the bar.
In the 39th minute, the central bankers took the lead through Duncan Nyoni after Wanderers defence failed to clear the ball layed in the box by Michael Tetteh.
Towards the end of the first half the central bankers were forced to introduce Kondwani Mwaila for Levison Maganizo who got injured in the buildup to the goal and up until half time Silver Strikers lead 1-0.
In the second half, Silver Strikers continued from were they stopped in the first half as just after restart, Duncan Nyoni could have doubled the lead only to be denied by Wanderers goalkeeper Richard Chipuwa.
The visitors looked disjointed as they lacked creativity and fire power up front that care taker coach Albert Mpinganjira introduced Misheck Botomani, Peter Katsonga for Zicco Mkanda and Francisco Madinga respectively and also gave the Nigerian Raphael his debut as he replaced captain Alfred Manyozo.
The cental bankers stood film in defence not to let Wanderers score that it ended 1-0 after 90 minutes and Silver Strikers progressing to the semi finals 2-0 on aggregate as they won by the same goal margin in the the first leg.
After the game Silver Strikers coach Lovemore Fazili was happy for the win saying they knew it will be tough.
“Am happy we have finished the job we started in Blantyre a few weeks ago and we fought hard today as well as we knew they will come hard on us in search of goals but the goal we scored frustrated them much and that was our game plan,”
“We still have a long way to go as we need to win two more games for us to be champions so we need to prepare well “, said Fazili.
On Wanderers side, team manager Stevie Madeira said “Too bad we have lost the game and we are out of the competition but we still have to concentrate and fight for the league as well as the other cups remaining,”
In another Airtel top 8 quarter final match played at the Dedza Stadium on Tuesday afternoon, Master Security Football Club have progressed to the semi finals thanks to a Shedie Maone second half goal to defeat Kamuzu Barrack Football Club.
The win means it has ended 2-2 on aggregate after the two legs of the quarter final stages but Masters have gone through on away goal rule after in ended 2-1 in the first leg of the quarter finals at the CIVO Stadium.
The two, Silver Strikers and Masters Security have completed the last semi finals pair of the Cup this year with Karonga United and Mzuni Football Club facing each other in the other semi finals.
