The Malawi National Womens football team coach Abel Mkandawire says the teams is ready to defeat Mozambique in the 2020 Olympic qualifier match to be played on Thursday at the Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.
The She Flames have been in camp for three weeks and Mkandawire says since the Chawinga sisters joined them in camp last week, the morale is high and they are set for the game.
“There is great improvement in how the girls are responding to training and with the Chawinga sisters around this time, we can all see the impact that Tabitha Chawinga has on the team and we believe she will lead us”, said Mkandawire.
The Chawinga sisters are Malawi’s export in womens football with Tabitha Chawinga playing for Jiangsu Sunning in the Chinese women premier league and Temwa Chawinga playing for the Swedish side Kvarnsvedens IK.
prior to the game, National Women’s Football Association chairperson Silveria Chalila said the game against Mozambique is a yard stick to measure the She Flames technical panel lead by Abel Mkandawire.
“The game against Mozambique will give us the picture on how the coach is capable of delivering on the ground and he should use the game to prove to us and the nation despite the fact that we can not judge him and the rest of the technical panel based on the results of a single game as we also look at how other things have faired”, said Chalila.
Meanwhile Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has announced that the She Flames game against Mozambique on Thursday will be free of charge.
FAM General Secretary Alfred Gunda said this has been done to give Malawians a chance to fully support the women’s team.
“We would like to see our women’s football team being supported by all Malawians . This is not the first time we are doing it as we also did it in 2012 and 2016 . We want to encourage Malawians to love and appreciate our women stars.
“We have big name stars in the Chawinga sisters, Tabitha and Temwa who have shine in Europe and beyond but most Malawian have never seen them play. So this is an opportunity for Malawians to watch them “, Gunda said.
After the Thursday game the She Flames will travel to Mozambique for the second leg of the 2020 Olympic qualifier to be played on 9th April and the She Flames last won a competitive game at home in January 2012 when they defeated Zambia by 4 goals to 2.
