Malawi under 17 national football team defeated South Africa 3-0 to register a fine start to this years COSAFA youth championship.

Playing at the Chiwembe stadium, the jnr flames attacked from the first whistle but South Africa’s defense stood film to frustrate the host.

A minute before the break, the host took the lead through a Mike Thomu strike from a Chikumbutso Salima inviting ball.

In the second half, the jnr Flames came hard on their opponents as they attacked in numbers.

Midway through the second half Mike Thomu double the lead for the host before completing his brace few minutes later for Malawi to win the game 3-0.

After the match, jnr flames coach Deklerk Msakakuona was a happy man.
“Am happy with how the boys have played. It’s not easy scoring three goals in an opening game of a tournament and against a team like South Africa. This should give the boys confidence that we are capable of doing better”, he said.

Malawi who are in group A, will play their second group match on Monday against Zambia before meeting Eswatini on Wednesday.
