Despite failing to win anything at the 2019 COSAFA tournament, the flames can afford a smile as the team and some of its players, striker Gabadinho Mhango and midfielder Gerald phiri jnr have won awards at the just ended two weeks tournament which was staged in Durban, South Africa.
The Flames have been named fair play team of tournament as the team was the highest scoring team with 10 goals and claimed most man of the match award , five accolades in six games : Gabadinho Mhango against Seychelles while Gerald Phiri jnr and John Banda were man of twice against Mozambique, Zambia and Namibia plus South Africa respectively.
The Flames also registered the biggest win of the tournament after defeating Seychelles 3-0 in the first game of their group B and never tasted defeat in regulation time in all the six games they played as they won three games and drawn three times before losing against Zambia and South Africa through penalties.
South African based due of striker Gabadinho Mhango and Gerald Phiri jnr have finished the tournament as joint top goal scorers together with Ashley Nazira of Mauritius as they both scored three goals and they will share R20,000.
Mhango scored a brace with Phiri jnr netting the other when the flames defeted Seychelles 3-0, with Phiri jnr also scoring against Namibia and both were on the score sheet again when the flames played against Zambia in the quarter finals of the tournament.
Gerald Phiri jnr who has been influential in midfield for the flames and was named as man of the match against Mozambique and Zambia and had four starts with twice coming in from the bench has won the award of best player of the tournament this year pocketing R20,000 ( K1 million ).
Malawi last produced player of the tournament in 2002 in the name of Essau Kanyenda and in recent years the team has failed to score more than five goals at the cosafa tournament.
