On Thursday 3rd of January the UTM’s first ever nation wide primary elections were thrown off course. In Rumphi Central the primaries were attacked and the Chairman was badly injured.
As reported by NyasaTimes, the attack on the UTM Primaries took place on Thursday by unknown rough necks in Rumphi Central causing injuries.
The UTM Observer Vice Northern Regional Governor Afiki Mbewe confirmed the attack. Mbewe also explained “The person who was chairing the polls has been severely injured and he was taken to the hospital in Rumphi District where we are told he has been moved to Mzuzu Central Hospital”
2019 Malawi Elections (@Malawi2014) confirmed over Twitter that Kondwani Nankhumwa said 9 areas would be rerun their Primary Elections:
DPP’s VP for the Southern Region, Kondwani Nankhumwa says the party will conduct a rerun of primary elections in 9 areas in the southern region following the disputes that arose. One such is Churadzulu East for Henry Mussa.
United Transformation Movement was established in 2018 by Saulos Chilima who also happens to be the Vice President of the Republic of Malawi. The main purpose of the primaries is to establish via a regional vote who the party candidates will be to run in the election. The elections will be held in May 2019 and will be contested between these parties; Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Malawi Congress Party (MCP), United Transformation Movement (UTM), Peoples Party (PP) and the United Democratic Front (UDF).
